About Love Elementary School

Situated in Houston Heights, Love Elementary is a Neighborhood Vanguard School at 1120 W. 13th Street, where a collaborative community of teachers, parents, and the principal enhances student learning through enrichment programs. This is made possible by securing grants, forging community partnerships, and fostering volunteer support, ensuring a well-rounded education for every student.

Over a third of the students at Love Elementary choose to attend despite not being zoned for the school, drawn by its engaging, vibrant, and successful educational environment. This highlights Love’s appeal and the trust parents place in its ability to provide a superior educational experience.

Additionally, 20% of Love’s students are part of the HISD Neighborhood Vanguard Gifted/Talented program, showcasing the school’s commitment to nurturing the potential of gifted learners and offering specialized programs that cater to their unique needs.

An insightful observation by an HISD board member encapsulates the essence of Love Elementary perfectly: “It may not be officially designated as a ‘magnet’ school, but it is undeniably magnetic!” This statement reflects the school’s ability to attract and retain families seeking a quality education for their children, further underscoring its exceptional standing within the community.

History of Love Elementary School

  • In 1920, the establishment that would become the cornerstone of our educational community was founded on the property known as the North Shepherd Civic Club in the Heights Annex. At that time, this district was a part of the county, not yet incorporated into the city. Due to the foresight of a local group, the property was officially acquired, marking the beginning of our storied institution.
  • As the community grew, so did the need for a more substantial educational facility. The rapid increase in enrollment highlighted the urgency for a larger space to accommodate our expanding student body. A dedicated committee was tasked with the mission to locate a suitable parcel of land for a new school site. Their search culminated in the selection of 1120 West 13th Street, the present location of our beloved school.
  • By 1926, the Heights Annex was annexed by the City of Houston, transitioning our school into a city-operated institution. This change ushered in a new era of education under the city’s supervision. In an act of tribute to a distinguished citizen, the community and school patrons proposed that the school be named after William Greston Love. Their recommendation was enthusiastically accepted, and thus, the school found its identity and home at the chosen site. The initial construction included four classrooms, laying the foundation for future growth.
  • Over the years, the school has undergone numerous expansions to accommodate the increasing number of students. By 1951, our institution boasted an enrollment of 513 students and a faculty of 15 teachers, offering education from kindergarten through the sixth grade. Today, our school stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of community, growth, and educational excellence.
