The Safe Schools Office is a cornerstone of our commitment to security within the Houston Independent School District (HISD), functioning under the auspices of the HISD Police Department. Our mission is to ensure that our schools and facilities are sanctuaries of learning, free from safety concerns. To achieve this, we deploy a cadre of meticulously selected, highly trained, and CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) certified personnel. These specialists are tasked with conducting thorough safety and security assessments across all HISD schools and facilities.

Our operational mandate, rooted in the policy directives of the HISD Police Department, is to sustain a robust Safe Schools Office. This entity plays a pivotal role in aiding the district to pinpoint both external and internal threats that could impede the sanctity of the educational environment. In collaboration with the district’s Threat Assessment Committee, the Safe Schools Office provides strategic recommendations to mitigate potential risks at each campus, ensuring a secure and conducive learning atmosphere.

Operations Officers within the Safe Schools Office boast CPTED certification, bringing a wealth of knowledge in environmental design principles to enhance school safety. Security Officers, reporting directly to the designated Corporal of the School Safety Office, engage in proactive dialogue with school and district administrators, faculty, staff, and other key stakeholders. Together, they craft tailored threat assessment and response strategies for each primary and secondary institution within HISD.
